Introduction to Computer Based Learning Environment

What is learning?

Personal Definition: Learning is the way/process of acquiring knowledge or new skills.

Online definition: Learning is the process of acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge, behaviours, skills, values or preferences.
The ability to learn is processed by humans, animals and some machines.

What Is Collaborative Learning?
When 2 or more people learn something distinct together, it is called collaboration learning. This can be achieved by using online tools like skype or ezTalks meetings.

Elements of collaboration learning
·       Positive interdependence
·       Enhance conversation skills
·       Small to medium size group
·       Time spent to evaluate progress

Types of collaborative learning
1.       Informal cooperative group – Helpful in breaking up a lecture into shorter, easy to understand phrases.
Advantage: It improve the amount of material retained by learners as well as their comfort working together
2.       Formal cooperative learning group: It is based on routine practice. Groups assembled for a particular period of time or may stay together for many weeks working on extensive projects.
Ad: learners sturdy and become comfortable applying various techniques of working together.
3.       Cooperative based group: These are long term, stable group that last for at least a year. Context in which learners support each other is provided. Member make sure everyone finishes their work and hold each other responsible for their contributions. Computer-Based Learning (CBL) “is the term used for any kind of learning with the help of computers”. It involves the use of interactive element of the computer software and application plus ability to present different types of media to the users. Adapting to the use of computer-based learning has many benefits, these include:
  • Benefit of users learning at their own pace.
  • Learning without an instructor physically present.
  • Using learning time efficiently.
  • Providing access to information tools.
  • It provides more engaging activities for the user.

Designing computer-based learning environment can be challenging task which involves mix of factors and variables. The context in which it will be used should be considered carefully. This can be individual learner; putting in mind their age, skills, educational experience, knowledge of the subject, first language to mention but few, in developing the purpose of the product.
There are different current technologies which can be used for the purpose of the learning environment; these are:

  1. Cloud Computing
  2. Mobile Learning
  3. Tablet Computing - To access textbooks needed
  4. MOOCs
  5. Learning Analytics
  6. Games and Gamification
  7. 3D Printing
  8. Wearable Technology
