ASSESSMENT

ASSESSMENT

According to Cambridge English dictionary, Assessment is the act of judging or deciding on the amount, value, quality or importance of something or the decision that is made.
Educational assessment is the process of measuring and documenting what students have learnt. It can be used to identify knowledge, skills and attitude of student through a lesson, course, and even grade level (ProProfs, 2015).

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT (Giesen, 2019)

There are three main types of assessment in education, which are diagnostic, formative and summative. These are generally referred to as simple assessment

            1.       Diagnostic Assessment

It is used by studying the student skill and capability towards a subject and identify misconception even before teaching takes place. Knowing student weakness and strength will help to teach better.
Types of diagnostic assessment
                      I.            Pre-test
                     II.            Self-assessment
                   III.            Discussion board response
                  IV.            Interview

            2.       Formative Assessment

This type of assessment takes place during the lesson. It measures students progress as well as the instructors progress
Types of formative assessment
                     I.            Observation during in-class activities
II.            Using homework exercises as review
                 III.            Question and answer section
                IV.            Self-evaluation of performance progress

            3.       Summative Assessment

This type of assessment takes place after the learning has been completed. It provides information and feedback that sums up the teaching and learning process.
Types of summative assessment
                     I.            Examination
                   II.            Term papers
                 III.            Projects
IV.            Student evaluation of the course
